    Local roundup: Stonington (8s), Old Lyme (4s) have a successful day in crew

    Stonington — Stonington High School’s girls’ and boys’ first varsity eights won their matchups against East Lyme and Old Lyme on Saturday morning on the Mystic River.

    Stonington took five of the six races raced in eights, while Old Lyme dominated in fours, including wins in the girls’ and boys’ first fours.

    “It was another great day of racing. We learn more about where we stand in the CPSRA league each race. So far, things are looking good for the team this spring,” Stonington girls’ coach John Thornell said.

    Stonington’s boys’ first eight of Ahmed Salha, Roan Schaffer, Ethan King, Jack Flaherty, Max McGugan, Clint Cramer, Alex Moore, Matt Drago and conswain Abigail Steeno won in 5:00.9. The Bears’ girls’ first eight won in 5:43.3 with the lineup consisting of Sydney Plant, Emory Anderson, Willow Fraser, Aubrey Short, Cate Statchen, Taylor Whitman, Taryn Nicholson, Anna Sundman and coxswain Mia Bottone.

    Old Lyme’s boys’ four won in 5:13 and the girls’ four finished first in 6:17.6.

    H.S. baseball

    • Jared Russo’s RBI double in the sixth inning gave Lyman Memorial the lead for good during a 7-5 win over Putnam in Eastern Connecticut Conference Division IV. Alex Ortiz had three hits and Dominic Pontbriant worked a scoreless seventh to earn the save. The Bulldogs are 5-2, 2-0.

    • Garrett Lenihan had four hits, three runs scored and three RBI as Wheeler defeated Tourtellotte 23-0 in ECC Division IV. Kyle Kessler and James Main had three hits apiece for the Lions (4-1, 1-1).

    • Griffin Pollard went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI in Fitch’s 9-6 loss to Hamden. Donte Valentine and Pat Lindy added two hits each for Fitch (3-4).

    • Ayden Kempesta pitched a shutout and was 3-for-3 as Norwich Free Academy beat Fitch 3-0 in an ECC Division I game Friday. Kempesta struck out 10 and Connor Doyle and Ryan Cleary drove in runs for the Wildcats (4-3, 1-1). Dante Valentine had two hits and Griffin Pollard allowed one earned run over five innings with eight strikeouts for Fitch (3-3, 0-2).

    H.S. girls’ track

    • New London’s Darielys Arnold won the long jump (16 feet) and placed third in the high jump at the Wildcat Relays. Tatianna Pemberton won the triple jump (32-1) for the Whalers, whose shot put relay (Arnold, Pemberton, Naomi Cox) finished third.

    • Tabitha Colwell, Serena Mazzi, Tabitha Field and Kathleen Walsh won the sprint medley relay at the Wildcat Relays with a school-record time of 4:35.23. The 4x400 team of Field, Mazzi, Walsh and Chase Gilbert won in 4:17.01 and the long jump relay team of Mazzi, Colwell and Lana Lopes was also first.

    On Friday, Gilbert placed fourth in the Connecticut Distance Festival Girls’ Invitational Mile at Hall High School. Her time of 4:55 was a school record.

    H.S. boys’ track

    • Old Lyme’s sprint medley relay team of Trevor Buydos, Patrick Lynch, Gabe Tooker and Ryan Ortoleva set a school record at the Wildcat Relays, finishing second in 3:51.76. Tyler Cann placed third in the shot put for the Wildcats at 44-10 and Patrick Lynch was third in the long jump with a leap of 19-6.75.

    • New London’s Treyvon Lewellen won the javelin with a toss of 140-6 at the Wildcat Relays, leading the Whalers’ javelin relay team to a second-place finish. New London finished third in the long jump relay, led by Tyree Barnes (19-0.25).

    H.S. boys’ tennis

    • Jamal Charles and Jayden Gomez won the decisive doubles match that gave New London a 4-3 win over Grasso Tech on Friday. Niko Churis won in singles for the Whalers, while Kaleb McCalla-Kevin Tenesaca and Alex Churis-Jhandel Marichal also won in doubles. Sebastian Canty, Logan Freitas and Juan Bulted won in singles for the Eagles. It was the third straight win for New London.

    H.S. softball

    • Ledyard remained unbeaten in ECC Division II play with a 12-1 win over Killingly on Friday night. Lexi Lemmon pitched a five-hitter with eight strikeouts for the win and was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Mia Starling was also 3-for-5 for the Colonels (4-2, 3-0).

    H.S. boys’ volleyball

    • Norwich Tech beat Cheney Tech 3-1 in a Connecticut Volleyball League match Friday. Landon O’Brien had seven assists, five aces and six digs, Mason Matthews had seven kills, 12 digs and three aces and Angel Garcia had 12 assists, four aces and eight digs. The Warriors (3-5, 3-4) won 21-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-21.

    H.S. boys’ golf

    • NFA’s Nick Wigfield was the medalist with a 38 and the Wildcats defeated Bacon Academy 161-184 Friday at Chanticlair Golf Course. Tyler Hollis added a 39 for the Wildcats (2-0) and Alex Gallardo was Bacon’s top finisher, also with a 39.

    Women’s lacrosse

    • Sophomore midfielder Abby McAllister matched her career high with six goals and Coast Guard Academy won its fourth straight game, beating Wheaton 14-9.

    Addy Bass added three goals for the Bears (11-4 overall, 6-3 NEWMAC) and Maici Mintchwarner made nine saves in goal.

    Prior to the match, Wheaton (8-8, 5-4) paid tribute to its senior class, including East Lyme grad Abigail Mountain.

    • Hamilton College scored in the final 90 seconds and defeated Connecticut College 10-9 in NESCAC play. Campbell Johnston scored three times for Conn (7-7, 2-7).

    Men’s lacrosse

    • Emerson scored in overtime and defeated Coast Guard 17-16 in NESCAC play. Ryan Hunter scored five goals and Noah Heller had three for the Bears (2-10, 1-5).

    • Liam Horkan scored three goals in Connecticut College’s 13-6 loss to Hamilton College in an NESCAC game at Silfen Field. The Camels are 4-8, 1-8.
