    Local roundup: Sweeney lifts Ledyard past Fitch in double overtime

    Ledyard — Freshman Kaitlyn Sweeney scored the game-winning goal with one minute, 40 seconds left in the second overtime, lifting Ledyard past Fitch , 7-6, in a high school girls’ lacrosse game on Monday.

    Sweeney finished with three goals while Tatianna Irizarry and Maddie McLeod each added two. Helena Robinson chipped in three assists for the Colonels (8-3). Goalie Lorelai England made eight saves.

    Bethany Lovering led the Falcons (7-3) with three goals while Brooke Bergandahl had two and Gabby Dimock had a goal and an assist. Stella Connell finished with two assists and goalie Elaina Brookhart had her 500th career save.

    In other games:

    • Sophia Gouveia scored 10 goals to power Wheeler past Bacon Academy, 17-6. Katheryn DelGrosso had three goals and Grace Cassata chipped in two while goalie Anna Barber made 11 saves for the Lions (7-3).

    • Emma Logel scored nine goals and added an assist for Stonington in a 15-6 win over Montville in Division II. Zoe Flynn had three goals and an assist for the Bears (6-7, 4-4). Kylie Spreng scored five goals and Karissa Hochdorfer added one for the Wolves (4-6, 1-5).

    H.S. boys’ lacrosse

    • Bacon Academy jumped out to an 11-0 halftime lead and posted a 19-7 win over Tolland. Ethan LoVetere chipped in six goals and two assists for the Bobcats (7-3) while Troy Johnson had five goals and an assist and Jameson Pirro added three goals and three assists.

    • Marc Macera scored three goals and Tyler Gagliardi added a goal and two assists for the Williams School in a 14-6 loss to the Harvey School in Katonah, N.Y. Brendan Li and Henry Champagne had one goal apiece for the Blues (9-3).

    H.S. baseball

    • New London rolled past Windham, 27-3, to improve to 4-9 overall. Lou Anaya had three hits, two RBI and scored four runs for the Whalers while Darius Aquino, Eddie Torres (three RBI) and Jorge Rodriguez each added two hits.

    • Winning pitcher Will Haugeto went 5.2 scoreless innings and added two RBI, carrying Fitch past Ledyard, 10-3. Trace Morales had two hits and three RBI and Donte Valentine added two hits for the Falcons (6-8). Ledyard fell to 1-14.

    • Wheeler scored a run in the first inning, two in the third and one in the fourth to beat Norwich Tech, 4-0. Korbin Anderson and James Main combined for a four-hit shutout and Bergel had a double and two RBI for the Lions (8-4), Main added a solo home run. Lucas Charette had two hits for Norwich Tech (7-8).

    • Old Lyme jumped out three-run lead and held on for a 5-4 win over Hale Ray in the Shoreline Conference. Ben Frazier had a single, triple and two RBI for the Wildcats (7-7, 7-5) while Jack Porter had two hits and an RBI and Jordan Hanes earned the win, allowing three runs and six hits in 5.2 innings.

    H.S. boys’ golf

    • Alex Gallardo and John Ceruti shared medalist honors each firing a 36 in Bacon Academy’s 5-2 win over Griswold at River Ridge Golf Course. The Bobcats improved to 5-3. Gennaro Lavado had a team--best 39 for the Wolverines (5-3).

    • Portland finished first with 312 strokes in the Wildcat Invitational at Norwich Golf Course and Shelton’s Cameron St. Pierre earned medalist honors with a 72. Xavier (313) was second and East Catholic took third (327). Woodstock Academy’s Don Sousa (74) and Logan Rawson (76), East Lyme’s Max Weston (79) and Jack Bucko (80), and NFA’s Nick Wigfield (80) and Tyler Hollis (80) were top ECC golfers in the field.

    • Old Lyme lost to Coginchaug 167-217 in a Shoreline Conference match. Manu Geronimo led the Wildcats with a 52 and John Morosky shot a 53. Albert Turman Jr. of Coginchaug was the medalist with a 38.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Norwich Free Academy suffered a 3-0 loss to South Windsor. Games scores were 25-15, 25-16 and 25-20. Gage Hinkley had nine kills, 11 assists and five blocks for the Wildcats (12-3) while Bryan Contreras added 16 digs and Keegan Johnston had two kills and 15 digs.

    H.S. crew

    • East Lyme hosted Bedford (N.H.) and Glastonbury on Sunday in the George Sherwood Invitational Regatta. Glastonbury won the team title. The Vikings were second in the girls’ novice race and the first and second boats came in third. All three boys’ teams were also third. George Sherwood, a alumnus of the program and former president of the East Lyme Rowing Association, passed away in 2023.

    College softball

    • Coast Guard Academy’s season ended with an 8-6 loss to WPI in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference tournament first round game. Julia Breidenthal had three hits and an RBI for the Bears (13-22), who fell behind 5-2 in the second inning and never recovered. Lillia Farlow added two hits and RBI.
