Eastern Connecticut Ballet stages ‘The Nutcracker’

Christmas traditions aren’t limited to family gatherings. People love Christmas traditions when it comes to their stage shows, too.

That’s part of the reason that “The Nutcracker” has remained a holiday favorite. Well, that and the eternal draw of its story and its dancing.

Eastern Connecticut Ballet, which is based in East Lyme, brings its always-popular “Nutcracker” back to the Garde Arts Center in New London this season, with performances scheduled for Dec. 10 and 11.

Students from ECB will be joined by two dancers from New York City Ballet — Unity Phelan and Indiana Woodward.

This production has a local touch: it’s set in New London in the 1850s, and the scenery reflects that, with sets showing everything from Whale Oil Row to the New London Custom House.

“The Nutcracker,” 1:30 and 7 p.m. Dec. 10 and 1:30 p.m. Dec. 11, Garde Arts Center, 325 State St., New London; $29-$56, with discounts for kids 12 and under and for seniors and military; gardearts.org, (860) 444-7373.
