Toddler dies after fall from third-story window

East Hartford - A toddler died Saturday night after falling from a third-story window, the second such fatal accident in two days.

The 3-year-old boy pushed a screen from a window in an apartment at Woodcliff Estates, police spokesman Officer Hugo Benettieri said Sunday. He said police are investigating. Assistant Fire Chief William Perez said the boy had a Massachusetts address and did not live in the apartment.

On Friday, a 2-year-old boy died after falling 25 feet from an apartment window at 118 Elm St. in West Haven. Family members were home and police called the incident "a tragic accident." No charges have been filed.

Family members took the toddler to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where he died, police said. The screen on the window where the child fell from had been dislodged, police said.

Perez said such accidents are a perennial problem, particularly in the spring, as people open windows to let in fresh air. Parents can guard against such accidents by installing a simple safety device that prevents the lower glass pane of a double-hung window from opening all the way.

Even a nail or screw attached to the upper window frame will prevent the window from opening all the way, Perez said.

The accident in East Hartford Saturday is the second in two weeks, he said. A six-year-old boy was hurt after falling from a window at a residence on Plain Drive on May 8, Perez said.
