McMahon, Murphy trade shots on campaign trail

Republican Linda McMahon and Democrat Chris Murphy addressed their supporters following their victory in the primary election Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012.

Wallingford (AP) — The two candidates for Connecticut's open U.S. Senate seat are making it clear they plan to wage aggressive campaigns, taking shots at one another following their primary victories.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy called on Republican Linda McMahon to debate next week. He said following a tour of a Wallingford solar energy company on Wednesday that voters shouldn't have to wait until September or October for a debate.

McMahon said her campaign began making automated calls Wednesday to about 300,000 seniors, accusing Murphy of agreeing to $700 billion in cuts to Medicare when he supported the federal health care overhaul bill.

Murphy called the charge a lie and accused McMahon of flip-flopping on Medicare.

Both hope to fill the seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent.
