Two more in state infected with West Nile

Hartford - State health officials say two more residents have tested positive for the West Nile virus, bringing the number of human infections in the state to four.

The most recent cases are residents of Bridgeport and Stamford, both between the ages of 50 and 59. The Stamford resident became ill in the first week of August while the Bridgeport resident became sick during the second week of July. Both were hospitalized for encephalitis.

The state also announced that mosquitoes trapped Aug. 13 in Voluntown tested positive for West Nile virus, meaning infected mosquitoes have been found in 41 towns across the state.

The second case this year also was a Stamford resident. The state health department said the person in his or her 60s and became ill the third week in July. A New Haven resident in his or her 30s was the first confirmed human West Nile case and has been released from the hospital. That person became ill the first week in August.

Last year, there were nine reported West Nile cases in the state. Health officials recommend using insect repellent and draining standing water, where mosquitoes breed.
