State Sen. McKinney planning run for governor

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — State Sen. John McKinney says he's planning to run for governor in 2014.

The Fairfield Republican and Senate minority leader said Thursday during a taped interview on WFSB-TV's "Face the State" program that he was "unofficially" announcing his intention to challenge Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. The program will air at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Greenwich Republican Tom Foley, a former U.S. ambassador to Ireland, has said he plans to run for governor again in 2014. Foley narrowly lost to Malloy in the 2010 gubernatorial election.

The 48-year-old McKinney has represented the 28th Senate District, which also includes Newtown, Easton and Weston, since 1999. He is the son of the late Connecticut Congressman Stewart McKinney.
