Toddler Girl Dead After Bridgeport Condo Fire

Bridgeport — A toddler girl is dead after an early-morning fire ripped through her Bridgeport home Sunday.

Fire officials responded to a call of a fire at a condo complex at 715 Frenchtown Rd. around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

City Spokesman Av Harris said in an email Sunday morning that the unidentified 18-month-old girl was found on the second floor, under the crib in her bedroom.

Two other children were overcome by smoke inhalation and taken to Bridgeport Hospital, Harris said. Three adults were also taken to the hospital for treatment.

Their conditions were unknown as of 11 a.m. Sunday.

The fire started in the kitchen area and the smoke spread to the second floor, where the child was found, Harris said. The condo's smoke alarms were disconnected, Harris said.

Police spokesman Det. Ramone Garcia said the investigation was still ongoing as of 10 a.m. Sunday and that fire officials remain on scene. Garcia said the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit is also conducting an investigation.

Harris said trauma grief counselors were on the scene Sunday morning to assist firefighters.

"When they find deceased children in a fire in a house, many of them have children that age and it is quite a shock and trauma to them, so we did have the grief counselors on scene this morning very early to talk to the firefighters as well," Harris said.

It's the second condo fire in Bridgeport in three days. On Thursday, 120 people were left without a home after flames tore through a condominium building on Charles Road.

Many in the building at the time of the fire were able to get out without injury, but one firefighter suffered minor burns to his ear. He was treated on scene and was able to return to work, fire officials said at the time.

This is a developing story. Check back for more information.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the toddler victim was 3 years old.
