Biden calls for infrastructure investment in Rhode Island

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says Rhode Island needs to invest in its transportation infrastructure after touring a bridge he jokes is being held up with "Lincoln Logs," a children's toy.

Biden visited the highway bridge in East Providence on Friday with the governor and other officials. He says it's shameful that it's in such bad shape.

The state is currently working to replace the bridge.

Biden later delivered a speech at a nearby highway maintenance facility.

Biden applauded the state's 10-year plan to repair bridges and roads, known as RhodeWorks. He defended the concept of partly financing the plan with highway tolls on big-rig trucks.

The plan was approved by state lawmakers and signed by Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo earlier this year after a lengthy public debate over truck tolls.
