UConn police investigate another bias-related incident

UConn police are investigating the latest in a series of bias-related incidents, this one which occurred at a student dormitory this month.

The incident happened March 3 in Busby Suites, the four-floor building located on the hill behind North Campus, UConn spokesperson Stephanie Reitz said. Details of the incident were not immediately available.

UConn police have identified and interviewed suspects, including at least one person not affiliated with the university, Reitz said.

"As with any alleged case of bias, UConn Police will conduct a thorough investigation in our efforts to identify those responsible and hold them accountable for their actions," UConn Police Chief Gerald Lewis said in a statement. "We continue to support our university partners in providing a safe and inclusive environment in which to learn, work and live."

The latest complaint marks the school's fourth bias-related incident during the spring semester, and at least the 17th bias-related incident since the beginning of the 2021-22 school year.

The first incident of the spring semester occurred on Feb. 21. While walking on campus, two UConn students, both members of the Muslim community, had racial slurs directed at them out of a car window by individuals driving by, according to UConn's communications page for bias reporting.

On Feb. 28, a Pride bulletin board, located in the lobby of Garrigus Suites, was vandalized. Another bulletin board in Garrigus Suites was vandalized on March 9, resulting in a Jamaican flag and content from a Black Excellence bulletin board being torn down, a school notice said.

Another notice on the communications page, dated March 10, detailed a fifth incident that involved "concerning" written information about the Soviet Union.

UConn police spokesperson Andrew Fournier was not immediately available for comment.
