    Driver from Montville charged with DUI after head-on collision in R.I.

    A wrong-way driver from Montville was arrested and charged with DUI after a head-on collision in Rhode Island on Saturday, according to the Rhode Island State Police.

    A Kia Optima entered Route 37 West just after 7 p.m. Saturday traveling the wrong way from Natick Avenue in Cranston, R.I., according to state police. The driver, identified as Jay J. Petit, 56, of Oakdale, drove just under half a mile in the second lane while passing multiple vehicles. The driver then merged onto the exit ramp from Route 295 North to Route 37 West, still traveling the wrong way. He got around 800 feet on the exit ramp when he hit a Honda Accord head-on, state police said.

    The driver of the Honda was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for treatment, state police said.

    According to state police, Petit fled the scene on foot and was later located and arrested.

    He was transported to Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence and was charged with driving to endanger resulting in personal injury, driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs resulting in serious bodily injury, duty to stop in an accident resulting in injury, obstructing an officer in execution of duty and refusal to submit to a chemical test, according to state police.

    Petit was later arraigned by a justice of the peace and released to the care of Roger Williams Medical Center, state police said.
