Truck spills 550 gallons of cooking oil on Q bridge

NEW HAVEN — Crews were forced to close parts of Interstate 95 for several hours Monday after a truck spilled hundreds of gallons of cooking oil on the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, officials said.

The spill took place around 9 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the bridge, which stretches over the Quinnipiac River, according to state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection spokesperson Paul Copleman.

Copleman said an estimated 550 gallons of oil spilled onto the roadway during the incident. He said the oil stayed on the deck of the roadway and did not reach the water below the bridge.

Environmental Services, a South Windsor-based contractor, assisted DEEP officials with the cleanup effort, which wrapped up around 2 p.m., Copleman said. State police troopers also responded to the spill.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
