N.Y. man used a fake ID to steal $20K from Wilton man, police warrant says

Stamford — A New York man is accused of stealing more than $20,000 from a Wilton resident using a fake ID and stolen identity, according to an arrest affidavit.

Archie Longson, who police said is also known as Archil Grdzelishii, was arrested by Wilton police Monday on charges of first-degree larceny, first-degree identity theft, second-degree forgery, criminal impersonation and two counts of third-degree forgery.

Wilton police first learned of the alleged crime on April 21, 2022, when a resident contacted police to inform them that an individual had used a fake ID to withdraw $20,500 from her and her husband's bank account, according to an arrest affidavit.

On the same day Wilton police received the criminal complaint, investigators also got a call from the Cambridge Police Department in Massachusetts saying that they had an individual in custody who was in possession of an ID for that resident's husband, the affidavit said.

Massachusetts police told investigators that Longson went to a local Webster Bank and allegedly tried to withdraw an additional $14,000 from the victim's account, the affidavit said. However, bank employees recognized Longson "from a picture that had been disseminated by the Webster Bank Fraud Department," the affidavit said.

When Longson was taken into custody in Massachusetts, police found a driver's license and credit card bearing the name of the Wilton victim, the affidavit said.

Longson was arraigned at the state Superior Court in Stamford Tuesday afternoon.

During the hearing, Judge Gary White upheld a court-set bond of $250,000 on Longson, despite objections from public defender Lisa Stevens. White cited Longson's lack of "legitimate ties to Connecticut" when setting the bond.

In addition to the Connecticut case, Longson is also facing similar forgery and fraud-related charges in New Jersey, New Hampshire and Massachusetts, according to Stamford's bail commissioner.

Longson is next expected to appear in court on May 19.
