Police: Farmington man dies after being pulled from water at Rhode Island beach

A Farmington man was pronounced dead after being pulled from the water at a Rhode Island beach Friday, a police official said Monday.

Westerly Police Chief Paul J. Gingerella on Monday identified the man as 74-year-old Frank Sievel.

The incident happened at Misquamicut State Beach about 12:30 p.m., according to the state Department of Environmental Management. Lifeguards pulled the unresponsive man from the water and tried to resuscitate him by performing CPR and using a defibrillator until Westerly EMS and DEM police responded around 12:45 p.m.

Westerly emergency personnel transported the man to Westerly Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release.

Gingerella said the precise cause of his death has not been determined yet.

Sievel was enrolled at the University of Connecticut from fall 1967 to spring 1972, when he received a bachelor of science degree in insurance administration, according to Stephanie Reitz, university spokesperson.

He attended UConn Torrington the first two years and studied at the Hartford College of Insurance his last two years, she said.
