Conn. Sen. Murphy deletes Kate Middleton tweet amid criticism

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy unwittingly inserted himself into the fallout Friday from the news that Catherine, the Princess of Wales, has been diagnosed with cancer.

Murphy, the junior senator from Connecticut, was apparently scheduled to speak on CNN Friday afternoon to mark the anniversary of the passage of the Affordable Care Act, when instead the network decided that it would use the time to announce breaking news regarding the princess' medical condition.

In a since-deleted post on the platform X, Murphy appeared to complain about being "bumped for this much more important topic."

That "topic," it would later be revealed, was a video in which Catherine — also known commonly as Kate Middleton — announced that she had been diagnosed with cancer for which she is undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

The news came after weeks of swirling speculation around the princess' health and whereabouts, which until Friday had been kept under wraps by her royal staff.

Several users on X, formerly known as Twitter, ripped Murphy over his post, which was picked up by news outlets including the Daily Mail and New York Post.

Murphy's office did not provide any subsequent comment regarding his deleted post, or the news of Catherine's diagnosis.

Murphy is a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, including its Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation.

Catherine is married to William, Prince of Wales, who is second in line to the British throne. Williams' father, King Charles III, was also diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer in February, and is receiving treatment.
