San Francisco coding school to expand to New Haven

NEW HAVEN — A software engineering school that began in San Francisco is planning to open a new location in New Haven.

Holberton School describes itself as a college alternative that trains engineers through project-based and peer learning. The two-year program does not charge tuition up front and students pay only once they have a job.

The school announced Tuesday that it is planning to open the school in New Haven with the District Innovation and Venture Center, a nonprofit dedicated to developing talent around technology. It is seeking approvals from the state of Connecticut to begin operating in January.

The school in California has been operating for nearly three years. Its students range in age from 18 to 58 and more than half are people of color.
