IDs of officers involved in fatal Danbury shooting released

Danbury (AP) — Authorities have released the names of the two police officers involved in a confrontation last month that resulted in the shooting death of one man and injuries to his mother.

State police on Tuesday said Danbury officers Regina Guss and Alex Relyea responded to reports of a suspicious man at a senior housing complex in the city at about 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 29.

State police say the man, previously identified as 45-year-old Paul Arbitelle, had a knife, refused multiple orders to drop it, and then advanced on the officers with the weapon.

Guss used a stun gun on Arbitelle, which was ineffective, so Relyea opened fire, striking Arbitelle three times. Arbitelle's mother was also struck and survived.

The State Police Western District Major Crime Squad is investigating.
