95 percent of R.I. customers have service restored

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Utility National Grid says 95 percent of customers who lost natural gas service in Rhode Island last week have had their service restored.

National Grid says as of 11 p.m. Sunday, most customers in Newport and Middletown have had their meters turned back on and gas appliances re-lit by qualified technicians.

National Grid suspended service to about 6,400 customers last Monday following a potentially dangerous loss of pressure caused by a supplier's faulty valve.

Some customers awaiting restoration may be seasonal residents who don't live in the area during the winter, so restoration may not occur until those customers request restoration of service upon their return.

Gov. Gina Raimondo has said the state has opened an investigation into the gas outage to figure out whether National Grid was responsible.
