Connecticut House to decide fate of contested seat

HARTFORD (AP) — A special four-member committee of the Connecticut House of Representatives is unable to reach agreement on whether to call a new election for a contested legislative seat.

The Committee on Contested Elections announced Monday it was unable to reach a consensus over the weekend and is now sending two separate recommendations to the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives to consider. Leaders are considering how to proceed.

Democrat Phil Young has already been sworn in to represent Stratford's 120th Assembly District seat, after winning by 13 votes. But Republican James Feehan has challenged the tally because about 75 voters received the wrong ballots.

The two Republican committee members say a new election should be called but the two Democrats disagree, arguing approximately 10,000 people who used the proper ballots would be disenfranchised.
