MANCHESTER (AP) — Connecticut police officers opened fire and killed an alleged parole violator Thursday night as he walked out of his mother's home after agreeing to end a standoff, authorities said.

The man was identified Friday as Jose Soto, 27, who officials say was shot during a confrontation with officers outside the home in Manchester. No officers were harmed in the incident.

The standoff began about 7:30 p.m. when the Department of Correction's parole fugitive unit went to question Soto's relatives at the home and discovered he was there, Manchester police Lt. Ryan Shea said.

“They heard the man yell, ‘If they come after me, I’m going to start shooting,’” Shea said.

The fugitive unit, which had a warrant to arrest Soto for violating parole related to a robbery conviction, left the home and a regional SWAT team was called in. Soto barricaded himself in the basement, but eventually agreed to come out, Shea said.

“When that occurred, there was an officer-involved shooting,” he said.

Tolland State's Attorney Matthew Gedansky, who is investigating the shooting, said Friday that four officers fired their weapons. Shea said two Manchester officers and two from other departments shot at Soto.

Soto, the fourth person in Connecticut to be killed by police this year, was given medical attention and later died at Hartford Hospital, Shea said.
