PROVIDENCE (AP) — Rhode Island residents can now select a gender-neutral designation on their driver’s license, Gov. Gina Raimondo announced Tuesday.

The new option will appear on driver’s licenses as an X, according to a statement from the governor's office.

The move aligns Rhode Island with neighbors Connecticut and Massachusetts and several other states.

“Representation matters at every level, and I am proud to make our government better reflect the diverse identities of Rhode Islanders,” the Democratic governor said. “This change will allow Rhode Islanders who do not have a binary gender to finally see themselves correctly identified on their driver’s license."

Residents who want to change their gender designation on their driver’s license must fill out the appropriate forms and return them in person to a Division of Motor Vehicles site, with a reservation due to the pandemic.
