Spike in drug overdoses reported in New Haven area

NEW HAVEN (AP) — New Haven area officials are expressing concerns about a spike in drug overdoses they believe is linked to heroin laced with fentanyl.

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said in a statement Saturday that local officials are closely tracking the overdose increase over the past several days, none of which has been fatal.

“Substance use disorder is impacting many in our community,” the mayor said. “Please look out for each other and seek support if you need it.”

As of Saturday morning, Elicker's office said there were 21 overdoses within the previous 24 hours and another 10 overdoses during a 24-hour period ending Friday.

Officials are urging people to not share drug injection equipment, get clean injection supplies from the city's Community Health Care Van and carry the overdose antidote drug naloxone, best known by the brand name Narcan.
