Former state senator in critical condition after car crash

BRIDGEPORT (AP) — A former Connecticut state senator was hospitalized in critical condition after a two-car accident in Bridgeport.

Edwin Gomes, 84, suffered head injuries in the crash on Sunday evening, his brother, William Aranjo, told the Connecticut Post.

“He pulled through his operation. He's not really out of the woods yet,” Aranjo said Monday afternoon.

Gomes, a Democrat from Bridgeport, was turning into a KFC restaurant when he collided with an oncoming car, city police said. The 19-year-old driver in the other car was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. There were no other people in the cars.

    The accident remains under investigation.

Gomes, a retired steel worker, served in the Senate representing the 23rd District from 2005 to 2013. After losing the 2012 Democratic primary and leaving office, he regained the seat in a special election in 2015 and retired last year. He also served on the City Council in the 1980s.
