No. 5 UConn women face first road test at Vanderbilt

Storrs — UConn's Geno Auriemma used the word "weird" to describe the Huskies' 72-61 season-opening win over California on Sunday.

The head Husky is hoping for some normalcy to return on Wednesday night when fifth-ranked UConn hits the road to play Vanderbilt at Memorial Gym in Nashville, Tenn. The game will be televised only on the SEC Network at 7 p.m.

"You win and move on," Auriemma said after Sunday's game. "It's not exactly what I hope we see in the future ... That's something we'll find out, whatever (our) identity is."

The Huskies were erratic, at best, against Cal, relying on their four veterans to lead the way.

Sophomore Christyn Williams scored a game-high 24 points while junior Megan Walker (21 points, 10 rebounds) and sophomore Olivia Nelson-Ododa (11 points, 13 rebounds) each had double-doubles and senior point guard Crystal Dangerfield added 14 points.

Wednesday will be a bit of homecoming for Dangerfield, who is from Murfeesboro, Tenn. She scored 19 points a year ago when UConn beat the Commodores 80-42. The Huskies are 5-2 all-time against Vandy and will making their first trip to Nashville since 1992.

UConn's four veterans combined for 70 of 72 points in the opener. Neither of the Huskies' highly-touted freshman — Aubrey Griffin and Anna Makurat — scored against Cal, so look for Auriemma to figure out a way to get them more involved against Vanderbilt, which is off to a 2-0 start with home wins against Jacksonville State (88-66) and Radford (80-46).

The Commodores are led by 6-foot-5 forward Mariella Fasoulas of Greece, who leads the team in scoring (15.9) and rebounds (7.2).
