UConn AD confirms talks with C-USA about football program

UConn athletic director David Benedict confirmed reports that he has spoken with Conference USA officials about the school's football program.

But Benedict wouldn't classify those conversations as negotiations, as stated in a story by The Athletic.

"While I have had conversations with Conference USA officials, characterizing these interactions as negotiations is an overstatement," Benedict said in a releaseFriday morning. "I will always do what I think is in the best interest of UConn and I am open to having conversations with anyone in an effort to position us for long-term success."

The Huskies play as an independent after leaving the American Athletic Conference following the 2019-20 season. UConn opted out of playing football in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Conference USA is undergoing some major changes due to realignment. Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, Alabama-Birmingham and Texas-San Antonio plan to depart to join the AAC.

That leaves six teams — Marshall, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Florida International, Texas-El Paso and Louisiana Tech. And that number may shrink given that the Sun Belt is reportedly interested in Marshall.

The Athletic reported C-USA has targeted UConn, Liberty and New Mexico State, all independent football programs, as possible additions.

UConn would remain in the Big East in all other sports.

But any current discussions between C-USA and UConn are just exploratory at this point.

The Huskies are 1-8 this season. They're off until Nov. 13 when they visit Clemson.
