UConn eliminated from NCAA baseball tournament
Stanford, Calif. — UConn's program record-setting baseball season came to a disappointing ending on Monday.
Wasted scoring opportunities, unreliable pitching and fielding mistakes cost the Huskies a shot at reaching the College World Series for the first time since 1979.
After a promising start to the deciding game of the best-of-three Super Regional series, UConn faded, falling to No. 2 ranked Stanford, 10-5, at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
The Huskies (50-16) set a program record for wins in a season but couldn't close out the Cardinal (47-16) after winning the series opener, 13-12, on Saturday. Stanford fended off elimination by winning Game 2, 8-2, on Sunday.
Stanford, which took the lead for good with six runs in the fourth inning, advanced to the College World Series for the second straight season and 18th time overall.
A UConn pitching staff that posted a 3.50 earned run average allowed 30 runs in the three Super Regional games. Coach Jim Penders used seven different pitchers on Monday. Starter Ian Cooke lasted just one inning, giving up two runs.
Like they did in Saturday's win, the Huskies jumped on top early.
Their first five batters got on base, with clean-up hitter Ben Huber driving in three runs with a base-loaded double. Bryan Padilla followed with a deep fly ball that left fielder Eddie Park nearly caught against the wall but dropped for a double. Huber had to hold up at third.
With one out, T.C. Simmons drew a walk to load the bases. But the inning ended when Matt Donlan hit into a double play.
The Huskies stranded seven on base in the first three innings while the Cardinal scored twice in the bottom of the first.
Facing a 3-2 deficit, Stanford's potent offense heated up in the bottom of the fourth.
No. 9 hitter Adam Crampton's two-run single put the Cardinal ahead for good at 4-3.
With reliever Enzo Stefanoni on the mound, the Huskies had a chance to limit the damage but shortstop Padilla slipped after fielding a ground ball, allowing Brett Barrera to reach base with two outs. Then Stefanoni walked Braden Montgomery to load the bases. Kody Huff belted a long grand slam to increase the lead to 8-3.
Huff finished with three hits and five RBI for Stanford, which had 15 hits overall.
Relievers Drew Dowd and Ryan Bruno kept the Huskies off the scoreboard for four straight innings while Stanford extended its lead to 9-3 through five innings.
UConn closed out its scoring with a run in the sixth on Bushling's home run and one in the ninth on an RBI double by Simmons. David Smith, Eric Stock, Korey Morton and Bushling had two hits apiece.
The Huskies reached the Super Regionals for the second time in program history, the first coming in 2011.
