More where that came from: Hygienic-fest events continue
Hygienic-connected events roll on this week. Here they are:
Cabaret Extraordinaire
8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 33 Golden St., New London
They call it Hygienic Cabaret, but it's not cabaret in the sense of a small smoky club where a chanteuse croons. Not at all. It's more a rowdy round-up of performance types. You'll see New York City actors, drag performers, belly dancers and more in a night produced by Kia B Music and hosted by poet/author Frederick Douglass Knowles. Suggested donation is $10.

Fashion in the Ballroom
8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, Crocker House Ballroom, 35 Union St., New London
It's Hygienic's own Project Runway! Well, it may not include challenges, but it certainly offers a cool fashion show. Designers Anna Lucas, Damaris Rivera, Susan Hickman, Alonzo Costello, Craig Williams, and Naily Khasanshina are scheduled to showcase their offerings, with models striding down the runway in chic and cool garments as music plays. Suggested donation is $10.

Hygienic Photo-Gienic
6-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, Expressiones, 84 Bank St., New London
Dorothea Lange's images of the Great Depression. Robert Capa's war photographs. Diane Arbus and her portraits of society's marginalized. Not Bob Guccione's Penthouse shots. This year's Hygienic Photo-Genic scavenger hunt will emphasize artistic expression and social change. The theme is "Shoot Pictures, Not People!" Interested participants can pick up a packet at the Hygienic Art Gallery from 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30. Inside will be a list of words associated with non-violence — to be captured by the artist throughout New London in 5x7 prints. Deadline is Feb. 3, and the images will be part of the Photo-Gienic VII exhibition at Expressiones. Admission is free.

Mayfly Playhouse 24
8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, Crocker House Ballroom, 35 Union St., New London
A friend of mine once was asked how long it took him to write an article for the newspaper. His answer: "Until deadline." A lot of times, deadline can offer inspiration like nothing else can. Which is a good thing for the dramatists participating in Mayfly Playhouse 24. They write a one-act play and then see directors and actors rehearse and stage the pieces — all in the course of just 24 hours. You'll be amazed at what they can create over the course of a single day.
