Show up for jury duty and be part of the solution

The protests cropping up all over the country as a result of grand jury decisions in Ferguson and New York City are a sign that many distrust and feel alienated by our criminal justice system.

    Understandable, with a caveat.

If you have ever been summoned for jury duty and thought “How can I get out of this?” you are part of the problem. Juries should represent a broad cross-section of the community, not just those who have spare time and an interest in the law. Jurors should come from all age groups, races and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Connecticut draws its jury pools from lists of licensed drivers, holders of state identification cards, voters, taxpayers and recipients of unemployment compensation. If those lists don’t generate enough diversity, and you think other groups should be considered, talk to your legislators.

When you’re summoned for jury duty, show up willing to listen and be fair. The court staff, lawyers and judges will explain everything you need to know. If you have a legitimate hardship, by all means speak up. You’ll probably be excused.

But if it’s simply inconvenient for you to serve, adjust your schedule and tough it out.

    Your country needs you.
