    Pre-game preview: East Carolina

UConn has never lost more than two games in a season at Gampel Pavilion since the building opened in 1989.

      That streak is in jeopardy.

The Huskies already are 2-2 in Storrs.

Tonight, they host East Carolina in an American Athletic Conference game. Game time is 7 p.m. (ESPNU).

      Here’s a pre-game preview:

      -- Records: East Carolina 9-12, 2-6 ; UConn 11-9, 4-4

-- Last game: East Carolina beat Cincinnati, 50-46, Sunday; UConn lost at Houston, 70-68, Sunday

      -- Probable starters:

UConn -- 6-0 sr. guard Ryan Boatright (17.5 pts, 4.3 rebs, 4.4 assists), 6-5 jr. guard Omar Calhoun (6.5 pts), 6-7 fr. forward Daniel Hamilton (10 pts, 6.7 rebs), 6-9 so. forward Kentan Facey (5.4 pts, 6.5 rebs), 7-0 so. center Amida Brimah (10.6 pts, 5.3 rebs)

East Carolina -- 6-4 sr. guard Antonio Robinson (3.5 pts, 70 assists), 6-3 jr. guard Terry Whisnant (13.6 pts), 6-7 so. forward Caleb White (11.9 pts, 3.7 rebs), 6-7 so. forward Michel Nzege (6.6 pts, 5.6 rebs), 6-10 so. forward Marshall Guilmette (5.1 pts, 3.0 rebs)

     Noteworthy:

-- The Huskies have lost four of their last six games, falling to sixth place in the conference. The Pirates are 2-6 in their last eight games and reside in eighth.

-- UConn remains upbeat despite their struggles.

“It’s not hard to stay positive because we’re still focused on the main goal, and that’s making the tournament,” Hamilton said. “I believe that we’ve got a chance.”

-- It is the first meeting between the two teams since 1978. UConn leads series, 3-1.

-- East Carolina is winless on the road (0-7), losing by an average of 18.4 points.

-- The Pirates rallied from nine point second half deficit to beat Cincinnati. B.J. Tyson, the team’s top reserve, had 18 points.

“Our kids have been playing pretty hard,” East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo told the East Carolinian. “We’ve been active in our zone. We’re playing a little differently, trying to slow people down, because we’re having trouble scoring.”

East Carolina is averaging just 56.1 points in AAC games.

-- Whisnant, a FloridaState transfer, leads the conference in three-point shooting percentage (46.4) in league play.

-- Tyson and Hamilton are two of the top contenders for the AAC rookie of the year honors.

-- It is the first of two games between the teams. UConn travels to Greenville, N.C., to face East Carolina on Feb. 25.

-- Injury update: UConn reserves Sam Cassell Jr. (stress fracture) out, Phil Nolan (hamstring) a game time decision.

-- Hot: It has truly been a Boat Show in the last three games, as the senior guard averaged 27 points during that stretch.

-- Cold: Calhoun is an icy 3-for-17 from field in last three games.

Opponents are keeping track of Calhoun, who’s cooled off considerably.

"We have a lot of great shooters in our league,” coach Kevin Ollie said. “They’re still seem to get shots.

"Every scouting report is going to have those guys take Omar away or Boat away. At the end of the day, you’ve got to be a player. You’ve got to get more in gaps… and get open.”

-- Defense needs to improve for the Huskies to build a winning streak.

They’ve allowed at least 70 points in three of last five games after doing that only twice in first 15 games.

-- UConn has more turnovers than assists in eight of last 10 games.
