New London, Norwich police departments hiring new police officers

The Norwich and New London police departments are each swearing in two new police recruits this week before the start of classes Thursday at the state’s police academy.

New London has not announced the names of the new recruits but plans a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday morning. New London acting Police Chief Peter Reichard said the department is attempting to find two additional recruits for the July police academy class where the city has two seats reserved.

New London has two recent police academy grads in field training. Reichard said the department continues to seek certified police officers.

Norwich Police Chief Louis J. Fusaro announced Monday the department had hired Christopher Wassarman, 24, of Thompson and Ashley Cartelli, 24, of Cheshire. They will be sworn in this morning.

Wassarman is a former Canterbury resident, a 2009 graduate of Woodstock Academy and a corporal in the Army National Guard. Wassarman was previously employed by GNC as a store manager.

Cartelli is a 2009 graduate of Rocky Hill High School who went on to earn a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the University of New Haven in 2013. Cartelli was previously employed as a security officer for Securitas.
