    Waterford set to play No. 1 Woodland in Class M volleyball semis

    Waterford High School, fresh off a dramatic five-game victory over Weston, plays top-seeded Woodland Regional of Beacon Falls on Wednesday in the semifinals of the CIAC Class M volleyball tournament at Guilford High School at 7 p.m.

    The No. 4 Lancers (20-5) will be making their third straight trip to the finals and have been battle-tested along the way.

    Three of their losses came to Class L quarterfinalist Fitch, including one in the Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament final, while a fourth came against Lyman Memorial, a Class S semifinalist, during the regular season. Waterford avenged that defeat in the ECC tournament semis.

    The Waterford-Woodland winner will advance to Saturday's state final (1 p.m., Berlin High School) against the winner of Wednesday's other semifinal game between No. 6 East Haven and No. 7 Ellington.

    In other high school volleyball news:

    • Norwich Tech's Anna Hammar, Madison Bodley and Vanessa Gumbs were recently named to the All-Constitution State Conference East Division first team along with Grasso Tech's Keila Lastranglio. In addition, Norwich Tech's Saige Laquitara and Grasso Tech's Patience Hamilton were second-team selections.

    H.S. swimming

    • Waterford's Meika Gathy finished all-state in two events and helped the Lancers finish in 10th place in the CIAC Class S championship meet at Wesleyan University in Middletown. Gathy finished third in the 500 freestyle (5:22.36) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:01.01). She also joined Caitlin Henderson, Tori Zane and Jayne Darras to place fourth in the 200 medley relay (1:57.55) while Henderson finished eighth in the 100 breaststroke, setting a school record in 1:11.52.

    Men's basketball

    • Aaron Lorenzo scored 23 points in Avery Point's 91-74 loss to Bristol CC in Region 21 play. Dylan Conley added 20 points and eight rebounds for the Pointers (1-5, 1-2).

    Men's soccer

    • UConn's first round game in the NCAA Division I tournament against Boston University on Thursday at Morrone Stadium in Storrs will start at 12:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be playing at 7 p.m., but was pushed back to earlier in the day due to weather concerns.

    College honors

    • UConn's Breanna Stewart, Moriah Jefferson and Morgan Tuck were named to the prestigious Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 list. Stewart won the award a year ago, which is announced during the Final Four along with the five-player Wooden All-American team.

    • Coast Guard Academy freshman Dan Moreno was been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week. Moreno won the 200 breaststroke in 2:08.49, the ninth fastest time in Division III this season, placed second in the 200 freestyle (1:46.50) and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team which won in 1:36.23 as the Bears (4-0) beat WPI and Providence last Saturday.

    • Coast Guard seniors Ashley Dumont and Maggie Hine have been selected to play in the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Senior Classic on Dec. 6 at UMass-Boston. The game features New England's top 32 Division III senior volleyball players includes various skills competition and an all-star game.

    Dumont, a second team All-conference and AVCA honorable mention All-region selection, was fourth in the NEWMAC with a .333 hitting percentage and led the Bears with and was ninth in the conference with 262 kills this season. She was also second on the team with 57 blocks. Hine led the Bears this season with 838 assists and was third in the NEWMAC with 9.31 assists per set. She was second on the team with 230 digs while adding 22 aces.
