    Local roundup: East Lyme swimming climbs to the top of the ECC

    Waterford — Maeve Counter won the 200-meter individual medley (2 minutes, 43.76 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (1:14.42) to help lift the East Lyme High School swim team to a 116-70 victory Thursday in a matchup between previously unbeaten teams in the Eastern Connecticut Conference.

    Counter also swam a leg of the Vikings' winning 200 medley relay team and Gretchen Stelter (50 freestyle), Mary Kathryn Taylor (100 freestyle) and Taylor Gray (100 breaststroke) added individual victories. East Lyme is 4-0 overall and in the conference.

    Freshman Elyse Gathy won the 400 freestyle (4:58.85) and the 100 backstroke (1:14.46) for Waterford (3-1, 3-1) and Jayne Darras (200 freestyle), Sophia Podeszwa (diving) also won events.

    Girls' soccer

    • Mia Londregan scored twice to lift St. Bernard to a 2-0 victory over Griswold in an ECC Division III matchup. Londregan gave the Saints (4-0-2, 3-0-1) a 1-0 lead just before halftime, then scored again in the 70th minute on an assist by Kara Bassett. Briana Beverly made six stops for the shutout.

    • Maddy Campbell scored three times in Montville's 4-1 victory over Bacon Academy in an ECC Division II game. Campbell scored twice in the first half, one on a penalty kick and one off an assist from Olivia Meehan, and added a goal on a direct kick in the second half. Michaela MacCracken added a goal in the second half, also assisted by Meehan. Lauren Ross made five saves for the victory. Montville is 3-1-1, 2-1-1.

    • Steph deLaforcade had three goals and two assists as East Lyme downed Fitch 9-0 in an ECC Division I game. Berkeley Callaghan, Olivia Facchini and Mackenzie Northcutt all had a goal and an assist for the Vikings (5-0-1, 4-0) and Victoria McCormack had her first varsity shutout. Fitch is 1-3, 1-2.

    • Juliette Hogan and Haley Warzecha both scored as Norwich Free Academy beat Ledyard 2-0 in an ECC Division I game. Natalie Dionne had an assist for the Wildcats (2-1, 2-1) and Kayla Tosses had five saves. Delaney Gagnon had seven saves for Ledyard (1-4, 1-2).

    • Anna Foster scored on a penalty kick with 55 seconds remaining in regulation and Stonington went on to a 1-1 tie with Woodstock Academy in double overtime. Woodstock took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Olivia Perry with 4:30 left in the first half. Stonington is 2-2-2 overall, 1-2-1 in the ECC's Division II.

    Boys' soccer

    • Marco Franco scored all four of New London’s goals, all in the second half, in its 4-0 win over Wheeler. New London is 2-4. The Lions are 1-3-1.

    • Graham Aird assisted on a pair of first-half goals for Old Lyme in a 4-0 victory over Coginchaug, keeping Old Lyme unbeaten. Mark Neithamer, Evan Getz, Danny Reid and Danny Cole scored for the Wildcats (4-0-2) and Brian Winters made seven saves for the shutout. Old Lyme outshot Coginchaug 19-9.

    • Dan Castelpoggi had two goals for Waterford in its 3-0 win over Killingly in ECC Division II. Cory Conderino scored for the Lancers (5-1, 3-1) and Austin Negahban and Harry Searle each had assists. Bryan Barlow had nine saves for Killingly.

    • Parish Hill topped Norwich Tech 2-0 in the Constitution State Conference. Don Duca had 15 saves in goal for Norwich Tech.

    Field hockey

    • Olivia Podeszwa scored a second-half goal assisted by Isabel Cavalieri as Waterford defeated Woodstock Academy 1-0 in the ECC, Waterford's first victory of the season. Mikayla Brucoli made four saves for the shutout. Waterford is 1-4 overall, 1-3 in the ECC.

    Girls' volleyball

    • Raina Haase had eight aces, seven kills and three digs as Wheeler beat Ellis Tech 25-9, 25-22, 25-15. Gracie Anglin had five kills, three aces and two digs for Wheeler (2-4) and Savannah Galluci added eight aces, two digs and an ace. Sarah Tellier had eight aces for Ellis Tech.

    Women's volleyball

    • Myia Williams had eight kills and Amanda Rowan had seven for Mitchell College in a 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 victory over Albertus Magnus. Janelle Rice added a game-high 20 assists for Mitchell (3-6) and libero Colby Zitoli finished with 15 digs. Waterford grad Megan Elphick had four kills and two aces. Mitchell had its greatest number of kills (9) and fewest errors (4) of the night in the final set.

    • Casey Hunt had a match-high 19 kills along with 18 digs as WPI snapped its 18-match losing streak to Coast Guard with a 27-25, 25-22, 17-25, 22-25, 15-11 win in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference contest. Shay Feeley had 17 assists and 11 digs for WPI (10-1, 3-1). Angelou Dunton had 17 kills and nine digs for Coast Guard (6-5, 2-2) and Makenna Martin had 46 assists.
