Local roundup: Ledyard's Shumaker to attend Milford Academy

Ledyard High School senior JoJo Shumaker was offered a lot of opportunities to play football next season.

Shumaker decided that attending prep school at Milford Academy in New Berlin (N.Y.) would allow him to evolve more as a student-athlete and provide more options when he's ready to play college football. Shumaker announced his decision on Monday.

"This wasn't a last-minute decision," Colonels coach Jim Buonocore said. "We've been discussing prep school as an option for a long time now, really since the end of his junior season. He's a young senior, and he has an opportunity here to become bigger, faster, stronger and also continue to mature. You don't lose any college eligibility. All you really do is better yourself if you do it the right way.

"He's already a full qualifier, so it has nothing to do with qualifying. It's just a situation where we felt that he could improve in the classroom and on the playing field will enhance the opportunities that he already has. He'll be giving himself more opportunities and more schools to choose from to go play for in 2016. The idea is to go for six months, then, next spring, second semester, be on a college campus."

Shumaker ran for 2,341 yards and 40 touchdowns this past season and scored 274 points. He was The Day's All-Area Football Player of the Year and was chosen to the state coaches' all-state overall team.

"Milford has a large network," Buonocore said. "They attract some of the top talent in the country. He'll be part of that and compete with those players on a daily basis, not only on the field, but in the classroom and weight room.

"I think he's looking forward to the challenge because it's going to be a challenge. He's going to be among some outstanding football players and a demanding daily grind for six months. They'll expose him to the best day-in and day-out."
