    Local roundup: Avery Point sweeps by Lackawanna

    Groton — The UConn-Avery Point baseball team wrapped up its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Lackawanna College on Sunday.

    The Pointers (29-10) won the opener 1-0 and the second game 6-5. Avery Point hosts the Community College of Rhode Island for the NJCAA Region 21 title in a best-of-three series beginning on Friday at Washington Park.

    Andrew Hinckley pitched a one-hitter in the first game and scored the game's only run. Hinckley (5-2) struck out eight with no walks. He walked with two outs in the bottom of the first inning and moved to third on another walk and a hit batter then scored on Avery Santos' infield hit.

    Avery Point rallied from a 4-0 deficit to win the second game, on the strength of a six-run fifth inning. Santos singled home the game-tying run and Joel Acosta made it 6-4 with a two-run single. Kyle Hart had two hits and John Russell got the win in relief. Russell (4-0) allowed one run and one hit over 3.1 innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Lackawanna is 30-18.

    In other games:

    • UConn was held to three hits in a 5-2 loss to East Carolina in an American Athletic Conference game. Groton's Aaron Hill drove in both runs for UConn (29-20, 8-10), hitting a two-run single in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2.

    H.S. honors

    • The CIAC held its annual Scholar-Athlete awards banquet in Southington, an event honoring two seniors — one boys and one girl — from each school whose academic and athletic careers "have been exemplary, whose personal standards and achievements are a model to others, and who possess high levels of integrity, self-discipline and courage."

    H.S. sailing

    • Williams School placed 15th out of 20 teams in the Connecticut High School Championships at Coast Guard Academy. Annie Longo and Sarah Wilkinson placed 13th in the A Division while Max Griswold, Caridad Muldro, Colin Madaus and Bert Atwater combined for a 15th-place finish in the B Division.

    College sailing

    Connecticut College placed 15th in the Coast Guard Bowl/New England Fleet Racing Championship in Newport, R.I. Brown finished first followed by Coast Guard. Jordan Bothwick, Bryce Kopp, Tori Allen, Lea Bushnell, Walter Florio and Luke Anderson finished 15th in the A division while Hugh MacGillivray, Charlotte List, Kim Bolick, Alix Israel and Albert Rodiger were 14th in the B division.

    Road racing

    • Dwight Worthington of Lebanon won the Montville Lions 5K, finishing with a time of 19:35. Hannah Kaplan, also from Lebanon, was the women's winner with a fourth-place finish at 21:40. Also finishing in the top 10 were Benedict Portugal of Norwich (20:15), James Ruddock of Uncasville (21:17), Monique Dudan of Lebanon (21:50), Nick Santiago of Jewett City (21:57), Jeff Linkinhoker of Oakdale (22:31), Gianni Ficarra of Westerly (22:33), Dino Festa of Oakdale (22:52) and Peter Harris of Niantic (23:13).
