    Tigers begin road trip with win at Aberdeen

    Aberdeen, Md. — The Connecticut Tigers continued to play well on the road by defeating the Aberdeen IronBirds 7-4 in a New York-Penn League game Monday night.

    The Tigers (20-21) have won six of their last seven road games.

    Sandy Baez (2-3) earned his first win since June 30 by going six innings while scattering eight hits and striking out two.

    Connecticut took control early by sending 10 men to the plate in the second and scoring five runs, the key hit a two-run single by Josh Lester. A.J. Simcox added an RBI sigle, Pat Mackenzie had a sacrifice fly and Victor Padron (3-for-5) walked with the bases loaded.

    Joey Havrilak added a double and triple for the Tigers.

    Summer basketball

    • Connel Henderson scored 16 points and Old Saybrook won the local Summer League basketball championship with a 65-48 win over Waterford at the Gales Ferry School.

    Jake Tulley added 11 for Old Saybrook. The teams could meet in the regular season in a holiday tournament. Kevin Johnson led Waterford with 16 points and Landon Peabody added 10.

    UConn women unveil nonleague schedule

    • The defending national champion UConn women's basketball team will play 11 nonconference games this season, 10 of which were announced Monday, including a home matchup with rival Notre Dame in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 5 and an appearance at Mohegan Sun Arena for the 2015 Hall of Fame Women's Challenge on Dec. 11, in which the Huskies will play Florida State.

    The 11-game schedule includes four games at home, five on the road, one at a neutral site and one game still to be announced.

    UConn will open the regular season at Ohio State on Nov. 16 and also play away games at Chattanooga (Nov. 30), DePaul (Dec. 2), Colgate (Dec. 9) and South Carolina (Feb. 8). The Huskies will also play home versus Kansas State (Nov. 23), Nebraska (Nov. 28) and LSU (Dec. 21).

    UConn, which finished 38-1 last season, has beaten Notre Dame for the last two national championships, including a 63-53 win over the Fighting Irish on April 7 in Tampa.
