    Local roundup: Avery Point comes up short in Florida

    Vero Beach, Fla. — Avery Point's C.J. Caprio had two hits and four RBI in a losing cause as the Ontario Blue Jays edged the Pointers on Sunday, 6-5.

    Mike Corso and Avery Santos each had two hits and scored for Avery (3-5). Starter C.J. Leindecker of East Lyme struck out four and allowed three runs over 5.1 innings.

    In other games:

    • UConn was swept in a doubleheader at Cal State Northridge, losing the opener 12-4 and the second game 2-1. Bobby Melley doubled, homered and drove in three runs in the opener for UConn (8-6). In the second game, former Stonington standout Connor Buckley doubled and former Wheeler standout Troy Stefanski had a sacrifice fly for the Huskies.

    Women's water polo

    • Connecticut College opened its season with three wins on Saturday, beating Penn State-Behrend 12-5, Grove City 11-7 and Utica 8-6.

    Senior All-American Kelsey Millward had 10 goals in the triple-header, adding seven earned ejections, four assists and a pair of steals. Emma Stephens had five goals and three earned ejections and Abbey Wrobleski and Sophia Soriano scored four goals each for Conn.

    College sailing

    • Connecticut College coed team opened its spring season with the Ice Breaker regatta on the Thames River. The Camels were fourth in the nine-team event with 211 points. Tufts beat Yale in a tiebreaker to win the event. Skipper Emilia Clemente and Elaina Lambright scored 107 points in the A division and skipper Rebecca Quirke and Hannah King had 104 points in the B division.

    Conn also competed in the John Jackson Memorial Team Race Regatta on the Potomac River in Washington and finished fifth in the eight-team field with an 8-6 record. Bryce Kopp, Walter Florio and Hugh MacGillivray skippered boats for the Camels and Tori Allen, Eliza Garry and Erin Smith were the crew.

    Conn's women's team competed in the Naval Women's Intersectional at Annapolis, Md., finishing 12th in the 19-team field with 110 points. Charlotte List and Allen were eighth in the A division with 46 points and Allie Maurillo and Serena Cipullo were 14th in the B division with 64 points.
