    Local roundup: Sun release 2017 WNBA schedule

    The Connecticut Sun will open the 2017 WNBA season, their 15th at Mohegan Sun Arena, with a home game against the Atlanta Dream on Saturday, May 13, at 7 p.m.

    Among the home highlights will be two appearances apiece by perennial all-star Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury and reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year Breanna Stewart of the Seattle Storm, two former UConn greats.

    Phoenix visits on Aug. 4 and Aug. 20 while Seattle plays at the Sun on June 29 and Aug. 8.

    "We are excited about the upcoming season and the opportunity to build upon our strong finish to the 2016 season," Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller said in a statement released by the team. "Our young team will be challenged early in the season away from Mohegan Sun Arena. Those challenges will include five of our first seven games on the road and all three of our games versus Minnesota during the first month of the season. Our great fan base will benefit later in the season as we finish the schedule playing eight of our last 11 at home, including seven home games during the month of August."

    Men's basketball

    • Zuri Pavlin scored 19 points with seven rebounds and five assists as Connecticut College beat Clark 84-74. Daniel Janel had 18 points and nine rebounds, Tyler Rowe and Lee Messier had 13 points each and David Labossiere came off the bench to score 12 for conn (4-1).

    • Avery Point lost to Springfield Tech in a NJCAA Region 21 game, 81-79. Tyrel Martinez and Amadi White had 10 rebounds each and Isaiah Jones had seven steals for the Pointers. 

    Women's basketball

    • Tatyana LaFrance Boyce scored 35 points to lead Avery Point to a 110-41 win over Springfield Tech in a NJCAA Region 21 game. Stonington's LaFrance Boyce also had 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Taleeha Green had 30 points, 20 rebounds and six blocked shots, Mia Dupuis had 23 points, five assists and four steals and Meagan Bianchi had 15 points, nine assists and four steals for the Pointers (5-3, 3-1).

    • Regis led Mitchell 22-7 after one quarter and went on to a 75-54 win in the New England Collegiate Conference opener for both teams. Camille Staggers had 12 points and seven rebounds and Jessica Shepherd scored 10 and had three steals for Mitchell (0-4).

    Women's hockey

    • Lauren Helm scored twice as Connecticut College beat Salve Regina 4-2. Jordan Cross and Kyle Floresca had goals, Kate Kohl had two assists and Bailey Mertz made 14 saves for Conn (4-0). Elena Gualtieri, Julie Beattie, Katlyn Paiva and Elizabeth Cho also had assists for Conn.  

    College honors

    • A pair of UConn seniors, safety Obi Melifonwu and wide receiver Noel Thomas, were named to the 2016 Division I All-New England team by the New England Football Writers Association. Thomas, who set a UConn single-season record with 100 receptions for 1,179 yards, made the team for the second straight year. Melifonwu, who will play in the 2017 Senior Bowl, led the Huskies in tackles (118) and interceptions (four) and tied a single-game record with 24 tackles vs. Tulane on Saturday.

    • Six Conn College athletes were named to the New England Small College Athletic Conference Fall All-Sportsmanship team: senior Alex McDevitt (volleyball), senior Kelsey McGinnis (women's cross country), senior Zander Mintz (men's cross country), senior Amana Proulx (women's soccer), senior Ryley van der Velde (field hockey) and sophomore Tyler Hoadley (men's soccer).
