    Local roundup: Whalers drop opener in boys' basketball to Bunnell (OT)

    Stratford — Zhyaire Fernandes scored 25 points as the Bunnell High School boys' basketball team beat New London in overtime Monday 59-56 in the season-opener for both teams.

    Major Roman had 12 points and 10 rebounds for New London and Jalen Benson scored 16. Elijah Martinez added 11 points.

    In otehr games:

    • Dave Lopez had 18 points as Lyman Memorial beat Montville 53-39 in the season-opener for both teams. Hunter Batman scored 13 for Lyman. Cam Collins had 11 points and Gennaro Davis scored nine for Montville.

    • Jared Neal had 16 points and Owen Duff had eight in Norwich Tech's 51-38 loss to O'Brien Tech. Joe O'Toole finished with 18 points for O'Brien Tech, which led 28-13 at halftime.

    • Grasso Tech came from down 12 at halftime to take the lead in the fourth quarter before falling to Goodwin Tech 64-56. Kariath Wiggins finished with 14 points and David Georges 13, both leading the way in the second half, while Marquez Hamilton chipped in with 11 for Grasso.

    Riflery

    • Alex Potchniak fired a 188 out of 200 to lead Grasso Tech past Montville 899-843 at Quaker Hill Rod & Gun Club. Other top scorers for Grasso (1-2) were Zack Stelling (185) and Zach Ivory (181). Angelica Rodriguez and Brittany Andrews each recorded a 173 for Montville (0-3). Stelling shot a perfect score in the prone position.

    College wrestling

    • Coast Guard Academy, ranked 24th nationally, won two of three matches at the Washington and Lee Duals.

    The Bears began the day by knocking off No. 14 Cortland 18-16 as freshman Patrick Irwin earned a 3-2 decision in triple-overtime in the final match to give Coast Guard the win. Freshman Owen McClave earned a 4-3 decision at 133, Matt McAllister won an 8-6 decision at 141 and Matt Vieira won 4-3 at 149. Chris Sullivan won a 3-2 decision to give the Bears a 12-4 lead. Three straight wins gave Cortland a 16-12 lead with two matches remaining. Phil Azzari's 3-1 decision at 197 cut the deficit to 16-15 setting up the heavyweight match which would decide it as Irwin gave the Bears the victory.

    In the second match, Coast Guard lost to Lycoming 21-19 as the match again came down to the heavyweight bout, but this time Irwin was pinned in 1:52. 

    In the final match, Coast Guard (3-1) beat Greensboro 28-16, clinched by a 3-2 victory from Mike Palomba at 174 and a pin by Cory Tomasetti at heavyweight.
