Mayflower II set to be hauled out of water today at Mystic Seaport

Mystic — Mystic Seaport shipyard workers are expected to haul the Mayflower II out of the water this morning beginning about 9:30 a.m.

Seaport spokesman Dan McFadden said it will take about 90 minutes to get the 106-foot ship into place on the ship lift and then hauled out of the water.

It will then be moved forward on the ship lift's rails. Once in place, the ship will tower above adjacent Holmes Street much as the whaling ship Charles W. Morgan did during its recently completed five-year restoration. Once it is in place, the shipyard can begin restoring the vessel.

The replica of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to America in 1620 will remain at the Seaport until June 2015, when it is slated to return to its homeport of Plymouth, Mass., in time for the tourist season.

The ship is expected to return to the Seaport over the next several winters so the restoration project can be completed in time for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims' arrival in 2020.
