DEEP to host meeting about plans for Voluntown boat launch

Voluntown — The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection will host a public information meeting to discusses details of the proposed renovations to the Beach Pond State Boat Launch on Nov. 2.

The meeting will take place from 7 to 9 p.m at the Voluntown Volunteer Fire Department meeting room, 205 Preston City Road.

DEEP has developed plans to reconstruct the launch, located at 205 North Shore Road, and make it a state-of-the-art, handicapped-accessible facility, the DEEP said in a news release. The ramp will be replaced with a single, grooved, concrete slab surface along with a separate car top launching area; the handicapped-accessible parking spaces, turning areas and approaches will be redesigned and paved, with sidewalks included; concrete pads will be installed at the end of the ramp, and concrete pavers will be installed along the ramp sides to prevent erosion. An ADA-accessible concrete dock system will be added to make launching and retrieval of boats safer and more efficient, according to the DEEP.

In addition, a solar-powered streetlight will be installed near the ramp to assist boaters launching or retrieving boats at night, and a protected concrete portable toilet pad will be installed. DEEP said. The agency expects to begin work on this project within the next couple years.
