Niantic woman dies in I-95 crash in Stonington

Stonington — A Niantic woman died Tuesday when the vehicle she was driving hit a metal guardrail on Interstate 95 and she was ejected. Her unborn child was critically injured.

Alexandra L. Brown, 26, of 11 King Arthur Drive, No. 5, Niantic, was pronounced dead at Westerly Hospital shortly after the accident at 11:08 a.m., according to a report from state police. The accident occurred about two-tenths of a mile before Exit 91 on I-95 southbound.

Police said Brown was nine months pregnant, and the baby was delivered through an emergency Cesarean section. The infant was taken to Women and Infants Hospital in Providence and was reported to be in critical but stable condition.

The state police report said Brown's vehicle "drove off the roadway to the left, hit the rope metal beam guardrail located to the left of I-95 South and rolled over several times."

Trooper First Class Robert Scavello is leading the investigation and state police are asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call Troop E in Montville, (860) 848-6500.
