Firefighters knock down Friday night blaze in Waterford in matter of minutes

Waterford — Firefighters were able to stop a fire at Bottinelli Custom Monuments from spreading throughout the wood-frame building Friday night, according to Cohanzie Fire Department Chief Todd Branche.

Cohanzie, the town's other four fire companies and New London Fire Department responded after a caller reported a fire in the basement at 717 Broad St. at 9:44 p.m.

The building was unoccupied at the time.

Branche said smoke was showing throughout the building and flames were visible through a basement window when firefighters arrived.

Crews sprayed water through the window to knock down the fire before going in through a rear entrance to finish extinguishing the blaze.

"The fire was knocked down in approximately 17 minutes," Branche said. "It was a very good stop."

The fire was contained to the basement and the stairwell to the first floor, he said.

The fire marshal is investigating the cause and origin of the fire and could not be reached Saturday.
