New London — A small electrical fire at Harbor Village North Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at 78 Viets Street Extension was quickly contained before firefighters arrived on Monday.

Battalion Chief Tom Curcio said one of the residents noticed smoke coming up from an electrical outlet and notified staff, who extinguished the small fire.

About 10 residents in the wing were evacuated, he said.

A representative for the center was not immediately available for comment.

Firefighters arriving on scene checked the walls and found some dry powder from the extinguisher and some debris from the smoke residue, he said. Firefighters cleared the smoke and notified Ledge Light Health District.

Ryan McCammon, Ledge Light Health District's supervisor for environmental health, said a sanitarian visited the site to check if any food may have been contaminated, but found no issues.
