Ex-Husky Aaron Smith among three added to UConn football staff

Storrs — Randy Edsall added three more people to his UConn football staff on Monday, including former players Aaron Smith.

Smith, a 2006 UConn graduate, will serve as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator for the Huskies. He will be joined by J.B. Grimes, who was named offensive line coach, and Eric Klein, who was hired as director of strength and conditioning.

Smith, 33, played for Edsall when UConn appeared in its first bowl game — defeating Toledo in the 2004 Motor City Bowl in Detroit. After graduating from UConn, he spent one season at Coast Guard Academy (2006) before coaching at Columbia (2007-11), Boston College (2012) and the University of Albany (2013-16).

He joins Jon Wholley, who was previously announced as linebackers coach, as a former players who played for Edsall during his first tenure at UConn.

Grimes, 61, brings the most experience to UConn. He has been a coach for 34 years at 12 different schools, coaching in 19 bowl games and watching 50 of his former offensive lineman play in the NFL. He spent the 2016 season at Cincinnati and coached at Auburn with new offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee from 2013-15. Grimes has also coached at Arkansas State, Kansas, Mississippi State, East Carolina, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Arkansas, Northeast Louisiana, Missouri and Delta State.

Klein, 46, brings 15 years of experience to UConn, most recently in the same role at Minnesota. He has also worked at Southern Illinois and Northern Illinois.

UConn, in a release, said Smith signed a one-year deal with a base salary of $145,000, Grimes signed a one-year deal with a base salary of $250,000 and Klein has a two-year contract with a base salary of $220,000.
