New London — City firefighters extinguished a two-alarm fire that badly damaged a multifamily home at 1108 Ocean Ave. on Friday afternoon.

Multiple 911 calls came into the city’s emergency dispatch center at 12:56 p.m. and firefighters arrived at the home moments later to find heavy flames.

New London fire Chief Thomas Curcio said the fire got a good head start and flames were coming from the doors and windows. He said firefighters performed a search inside to ensure all residents had evacuated. No injuries were reported.

Curcio said the extent of the damage is severe and doesn’t expect any of the approximately five residents from four apartments to be able to return.

The Red Cross was called in to help with emergency needs, including a place to stay. The organization said Friday evening that it was assisting five adults and one child.

Curcio said the second alarm was called to provide extra manpower and to cover the firehouse. Mutual aid departments included Waterford, the Submarine Base Fire Department and Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department from Groton. Providence Canteen, a fire and police rehabilitation unit, also provided assistance.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the city fire marshal’s office.
