Norwich — Seven people and three pets were displaced from their home after a fire broke out in a kitchen Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded just after 2 p.m. to a fire in a single-family home at 38 13th St., according to the Norwich Fire Department. Police arrived first and reported a light smoke condition, and firefighters responded in four minutes, finding smoke coming out of the windows and eaves.

Crews entered the house and found a fire burning in the kitchen, from the stove area up to the cabinets and ceiling. They quickly extinguished the flames and kept the fire contained to the kitchen area, officials said.

The Mohegan Tribal FAST team also responded, while the volunteer fire companies in Norwich covered headquarters and responded to three additional calls.

Those who live in the home — two adults and five children — were displaced due to smoke damage. The American Red Cross and city Animal Control Department were assisting them, and the homeowner was working with the city building department, fire officials said.

The person in the home at the time of the fire was able to safely evacuate on her own, the fire department said, and there were no injuries reported.

The Norwich Fire Marshal's office is investigating the fire.
