On a beautiful August day, the Sergio Franchi Memorial Concert in Stonington can be a sublime summer experience.

Of course, there's the music, with a grand concert featuring world-class singers. Last year's program boasted a member of Il Divo and vocalists who have performed at the Metropolitan Opera. The singers are accompanied by a 32-piece orchestra, conducted this year by David LaMarche, a Westerly native who is American Ballet Theatre's conductor and music administrator. Hosting it all is the irrepressible Eva Franchi, Sergio's widow.

But there's the atmosphere, too, with audience members spread out on the Franchi estate's sweeping lawn, as they picnic and chat with friends and enjoy the day even before the show begins.

And there's the chance for concert-goers to peek inside the life of the late, great Franchi. They can go inside the singer's home and chapel and can ooo and aah over his antique cars and memorabilia.

The grounds open three hours before the 2 p.m. performance so folks can wander the grounds and enjoy a picnic.

Eva Franchi created this annual concert four years after Sergio's 1990 death from brain cancer; the purpose is to raise money for a scholarship fund for young vocalists.
