Poquonnock Road improvement project in Groton has begun

Groton — A project to improve Poquonnock Road in the City of Groton has begun.

The road reconstruction project includes the Five Corners intersection (Benham Road, Chicago Avenue, Mitchell Street and Poquonnock Road), running east and ending just prior to the Rainville Avenue intersection, said City of Groton Public Works Services Coordinator Heidi Comeau.

The purpose of the project is to fix flaws in the road, which was built over an existing rail line, and improve pedestrian access.

Comeau said the contractor began work Friday and construction is expected to continue through October, according to a notice from the city.

"We believe there will be minimal impact on traffic in the area and anticipate at least one lane of traffic open at most times," said Comeau, adding that most work is scheduled to take place between 7 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. weekdays.

Comeau said the $2.2 million project is being funded with a state Department of Transportation grant.
