The 2020 HBO adaptation of “I Know This Much Is True” wasn’t filmed here, even though author Wally Lamb based the fictional Three Rivers on several cities in eastern Connecticut.

But our region is getting something arguably better. Star Mark Ruffalo and director Derek M. Cianfrance will come to New London next week for screenings of “I Know This Much Is True” at the Garde Arts Center.

Wally Lamb, the bestselling author who lives in Connecticut, will host an audience chat with Ruffalo and Cianfrance. (Cianfrance’s other credits include “Blue Valentine” and “The Place Beyond the Pines”).

Ruffalo was filming one of his “Avengers” movies, where he plays Bruce Banner/Hulk, when he read the book “I Know This Much Is True,” which Lamb’s agent sent along. His dual performance in “I Know This Much Is True” – as a paranoid schizophrenic and his twin brother – earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.

The six episodes of “I Know This Much Is True” will be screened over the course of three nights at the Garde, with Ruffalo, Cianfrance and Lamb attending on Sept. 22 and 23.

This fundraising event will help celebrate the Garde’s Outstanding Historic Theatre of 2022 Award, presented by the League of Historic American Theatres.
