The Great Alone
Kristin Hannah
Kristin Hannah follows up her bestselling book-club staple "The Nightingale" with this tale of a teenaged girl in the early 1970s who moves to a particularly remote area of Alaska with her psychologically-war-ravaged father and her placating mother. The characters and dialogue are written in a fairly unexceptional way, but Hannah shines in describing Alaska's harsh beauty, powerful solitude and eternal danger. It's almost as if those sections were created by another author. No wonder Hannah captures Alaska so thrillingly. She knows the place firsthand; her family co-founded an adventure lodge in Sterling, Alaska, in the 1980s.
